Orangery Restaurant awarded AA Rosette

Local residents in and around Gloucestershire can now treat their taste buds with award winning cuisine. The Tortworth Court Four Pillars Hotel in Wotton-under-Edge was awarded its first AA Rosette for its food after an inspection of the hotel and its services.

The AA Rosette award scheme assesses the quality of food in restaurants and hotels across the country. The hotel’s Orangery restaurant received the accolade under the inspired leadership of Head Chef Nigel Jones. Nigel took on the role in 2005, and over the past year has had his sights firmly focused on gaining the prestigious AA rosette for the restaurant.

Nigel commented “I wanted to move the restaurants focus away from Italian cuisine and take advantage of the simple, local quality produce available from the estate and serve a range of food with innovative ideas taken from modern British dishes – but with a bit of a twist! This award clearly demonstrates that all out hard work over recent months has paid off. Our next aim will be to get our second rosette and I have a great team around me to help achieve this.”

Nigel impressed the AA inspector with a seasonal menu of locally sourced produce, much of it from the Tortworth Estate, reflecting all that is best about modern British cuisine. Main meals include a choice of Tortworth Estate Fillet Steak with cabbage and bacon and Cotswold Way gravy, Saxon Farm Lamb Loin with devilled tomato and colcannon or Pea Shell Farm Pork Belly with caramelised apple and baby leeks. The hotel was also judged on its staff, reservations procedures, accommodation and the standard of the breakfasts it serves as well as dinner during the inspector’s overnight stay which resulted in an overall increased merit score of 74%.

Commenting on the success Stephen Cotton, General Manager at the hotel commented, “The restaurant always had a good reputation but to gain its first rosette is absolutely fantastic. It is a stunning result which is a credit to the entire kitchen team and it emphasises the quality of the food which is served in the Orangery Restaurant.”

The Orangery Restaurant is a truly unique venue within the grounds of this four star grade II listed Victorian mansion. It was originally built in 1899 as a lavish conservatory that housed exotic shrubs and plants. The extensive and ornate curved glass panels have been retained providing diners with a light and airy experience. It is open for lunch Tuesday to Friday 12.30pm - 2.30pm, evenings Tuesday to Thursday 7pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 6.30pm to 10pm. Advanced bookings are strongly recommended due to the popularity of the restaurant.
